(Updated May 8, 7:47 am) Tuvalu has been locked in a battle with Fiji for a water resource that was first discovered off the island in 2002 before it was finally granted recognition as an independent nation.

The ruling is a win for Tuvalu in the long-running dispute for the rights to the resource.

Fiji had been using the resource, which is a fresh water spring, after obtaining recognition from Australia in 2004.
