Darrell Henderson has been a fixture at Tennessee since he arrived on campus as a walk-on from the University of Tennessee-Martin in the spring of 2008 – and after the Volunteers beat Purdue on the road in that season opener, he was on their recruiting list for the entire 2010 class.

That’s what Tennessee State coach John Cohen asked after his team lost to Murray State in the opening round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs, 13-3, in the regular-season finale Sunday.

Cohen, the former Murray State head coach and Tennessee State assistant, knows the difference.

“We beat Tennessee in the playoffs,” he said. “Yeah, I’m a big fan of Tennessee.”

“You don’t want to see a team that is ranked No. 1 by the AP and No. 2 by the coaches be out of the playoffs,” one Tennessee fan told me in the middle of the first quarter of the Tennessee-LSU game last week. “We can put two teams in the top 10 and maybe that gives us a chance.”

He might have been talking about Tennessee
