Lightyear was founded by three scientists, the late Roger Maris and Robert Bigelow and Richard Hammel who worked at Bell Labs (now AT&T Labs), the American National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), California Institute of Technology (now Caltech). Lightyear is headquartered in Mountain View, CA. In 1985, Lightyear announced that Bill Gates had donated a share of its stock to the development of a “About Lightyear.com

Lightyear.com is a website devoted to the public presentation of astronomical information. As such, LIGHT YEAR has been a primary sponsor of the public media of astronomy since the early 1980s. The organization’s goal has always been the outreach of astronomy for the public, not the profit-making. The original mission of Lightyear.com was to provide the public with information and education on astronomy.
